Přednáška Johanny Prien o věštcích ze západního Bhútánu

Johanna Prien pobývala v západním Bhútánu v rámci dlouhodobého projektu tibetanistiky berlínské Humboldtovy univerzity. Zkoumala roli laických náboženských specialistů zvaných pawo a nedžorma, kteří plní řadu rolí od věštců až po léčitele. Oblast západního Bhútánu je tibetologům dosud velmi málo známá. Srdečně zveme na přednášku pořádanou 27. 10. 2015 v 17:30, v místnosti 427.

Healing Oracles in Western Bhutan: How pawo and neyjorma cure patients and each other

Tuesday, October 27, Celetna 20, room No. 427

Johanna Prien will present preliminary research findings from her fieldwork in Bhutan. She spent five months in a village in Bhutan to find out about the life and work of a special kind of ritual specialists which are called pawo and neyjorma.

Ritual specialists can be found in most societies of the Tibetan Cultural Area. Those experts are consulted for all kinds of problems: Illness, loss, theft or when general advice is needed.

Pawo and neyjorma mainly act as oracles providing services like annual protective rituals for households and villages as well as diagnosing illnesses and curing them by finding out which kind of offerings have to be done. At the same time, pawo and neyjorma can become ill themselves by breaking certain taboos which causes a “state of pollution”. To be cleansed and cured a special ritual is needed which can only be performed by a pawo or neyjorma of a higher status.

The lecture will give an overview of the everyday and ritual life of the pawo and neyjorma with a focus on the ritual specialist’s protective and healing rituals.
